Wyatt Emmerich: Remembering Leland Speed and the value of movers and shakers
One of the great privileges of being the publisher of the Northside Sun for 30 years has been getting to know the big time movers and shakers of Jackson.
Wyatt Emmerich: Wicker-sponsored bill would make social media companies more accountable
Kudos to Mississippi U. S. Senator Roger Wicker for sponsoring a bill to amend Section 230 of the Communications Act of 1996.
I know most readers are scratching their heads wondering “what the heck is Section 230?” Sounds rather technical and minor.
Wyatt Emmerich: Open primary initiative underway
Back in the ’80s, the Mississippi legislature passed an open primary law just like the one in Louisiana. For reasons no one understood, the U.S. Justice Department would not approve Mississippi’s law but did approve Louisiana’s.
Wyatt Emmerich: Sacrificing privacy for free apps
Like lobsters in the slowly heating pot, Americans are getting cooked without even knowing it. In exchange for free apps on our phones, we are giving up every smidgen of our privacy.

Wyatt Emmerich: Mississippi unemployment at record low
Our nation is going through a period of record low unemployment rates. Unemployment in July was 3.9 percent nationwide and 4.8 percent in Mississippi.
Wyatt Emmerich: State legislature more autocratic under Republicans

Unfortunately, a huge percentage of that money is wasted because the drugs don’t work.
Wyatt Emmerich: Mississippi dodged a bullet: Kemper is over and done
It’s been a decade, but the Kemper lignite power plant debacle is finally over and done. Mississippi dodged a bazooka.
Wyatt Emmerich: Megadeals are damaging state’s economy
Wouldn’t you love to sell something for $50 million and only be required to pay back $5 million if you failed to deliver? What a deal.
Wyatt Emmerich: State should be more competitive on solar
Mississippi has some of the worst laws in the nation on solar energy. That’s too bad because solar is becoming competitive and Mississippi has lots of sunshine.
Wyatt Emmerich: McDaniel vs. Cochran: Ideology or money?
Now that the Cochran-McDaniel race has gone to a runoff, I feel regretfully compelled to write again on the subject.
As I said in my previous column, this is a choice of ideology or money. McDaniel is the purist and would refuse federal bucks on principle. Sen. Cochran has power and clout galore that will directly benefit Mississippi.
