Back in August officials from the Mississippi Department of Transportation, Kansas City Southern Railway and the Columbus City Council held a public hearing to discuss a proposal to close six Southside railroad crossing while adding safety upgrades to other crossings.
In August, officials from Kansas City Southern Railway and the Mississippi Department of Transportation fielded a number of responses from concerned citizens at a public hearing regarding the condition of 12 railroad crossings in south Columbus.
It appears as though the Columbus City Council will not take up the matter of a proposal to close six railroad crossings on the city’s Southside, although city leaders insist the idea could emerge again, perhaps as soon as next year.
It is unlikely that Columbus councilmen will consider a proposal to close railroad crossings on Southside this year, but options remain on the table and the situation may be re-addressed in 2014.
