Mississippi State softball ‘pushing the envelope’ and fueling turnaround with embrace of pitching analytics
Under pitching coach Josh Johnson and his trusty Rapsodo system, the Bulldogs turned one of the SEC’s worst pitching staffs in 2019 to one of the conference’s best this year.
Willis responded to being named SEC pitcher of the week by throwing a no-hitter with 19 strikeouts Friday and striking out 12 in 6 2/3 shutout innings Sunday. The junior made a quick transition to Starkville and has developed into an ace for the Bulldogs right away.
Willis struck out 12 hitters in 6.2 scoreless innings, following up a no-hit performance Friday against Mississippi Valley State as the Bulldogs went 5-0 at the Starkville tournament.
Sophomore outfielder Chloe Malau’ulu was named the SEC co-player of the week, junior Annie Willis was named co-pitcher of the week, and freshman shortstop Madisyn Kennedy was named co-freshman of the week.
