STARKVILLE — Mississippi State junior cornerback Cameron Dantzler is going pro.
Dantzler, a Hammond, Louisiana. native, announced his decision Friday on social media with the following statement:
“First off I would like to thank God for giving me this opportunity to play this game called football. I am excited to announce that I will be forgoing my senior year and entering the 2020 NFL Draft. After praying over it and discussing with my family, I have decided now is the best time for me to pursue my dream of playing in the NFL. I would like to thank the University, entire coaching staff and all my teammates. I am forever grateful for every member of the Bulldogs community #HAILSTATE!”
Dantzler will leave Starkville as one of the most productive secondary players of the past decade. After redshirting his first year on campus, he played in all 13 games his redshirt freshman season. As a sophomore he was named to the All-SEC second team by the Associated Press and is a candidate for the Jim Thorpe Award, Bronko Nagurski Trophy and Bednarik Award this season.
In nine games this season, Dantzler recorded 31 tackles — two for a loss — and two interceptions.
Reports have circulated that Dantzler does not plan to play in MSU’s upcoming bowl game. The destination of that game will be announced Sunday afternoon.
