NEW HOPE — Friday was a big day for New Hope boys basketball senior Matthew Stennis, who signed his National Letter of Intent to continue his playing career at Hinds Community College.
The guard has been an integral part of the Trojans for the past few seasons, running the point this season.
New Hope’s quest for a state title fell short in the quarterfinals of the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 5A playoffs, but Stennis now continues the pipeline of Trojans to the next level.
“When I committed, I felt at home and in a family environment where I could get better,” Stennis said. “… I’m really blessed to be in this position.”
Stennis was one of three players in the Golden Triangle to commit to Hinds on Friday as Starkville’s Jonathan Baker and Nate Pruitt also signed their NLI to play for the Eagles.
New Hope won the Class 5A, Region 1 tournament, finishing 19-8 overall and 7-1 in region play, Stennis being a big reason for that success.
“I’m really excited for and proud of Matt for getting the opportunity to continue his education and basketball career at Hinds,” New Hope head coach Drew McBrayer said. “He has worked extremely hard for this opportunity and I’m positive he will continue to do so.”
Signing to play basketball in college was a goal for Stennis, and he’ll now get the opportunity to represent the Trojans at the next level.
“It means a lot to come out of New Hope and represent,” Stennis said. “There has been a lot of talent before me that hasn’t had an opportunity to play in college.”
