COLUMBUS — Former Starkville Academy and Oak Hill Academy boys basketball coach Andrew Howell was named the newest boys basketball head coach for Heritage Academy, the school announced on Thursday.
Howell most recently coached at Pillow Academy but brings over a history of success within the Golden Triangle. In his one season with the Volunteers, they finished 25-10 and won the Midsouth Association of Independent Schools Class 5A North State championship, losing the state title game to Greenville Christian.
“I am looking forward to getting to know the students, staff and faculty at Heritage,” Howell said. “They have a reputation across the state as being a great academic school with a very competitive athletic program. I am excited about this opportunity to build on the basketball program at Heritage.”
Previous to his time at Starkville Academy, Howell coached in West Point with Oak Hill Academy, leading the Raiders to a 38-14 record in his two seasons there.
He was named MAIS Class 4A, District 1 Coach of the Year twice, leading the Raiders to their first Overall State Tournament in program history.
“I feel confident that Coach Howell’s knowledge of the game, his history of success and his strong character will move our basketball program and our school forward,” Heritage Academy Headmaster Sean Harrison said. “In discussions with him, I was impressed by his excitement for the opportunity at Heritage as well as his genuine love for his players.”
Howell began his coaching career as a student assistant at Mississippi College before heading to Southern Miss. He also was an assistant coach at Presbyterian Christian School from 2016-19.
Howell assumes duties as both the varsity and junior varsity head coach. He will begin his duties at Heritage on June 1.
