PITTSBURGH — After recording its most successful season of the modern era, the Mississippi University for Women volleyball team was awarded a pair of United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) all-America honors to Caledonia High School product Maddy Suggs and Tupelo’s Maggie Griggs. Suggs was a first-team USCAA all-American, while Griggs was a second-team selection.
The duo was also instrumental in helping the Owls earn their first-ever USCAA post-season tournament bid last weekend. MUW’s eight victories were the most by a team since the sport was reinstated at the school in 2017.
“I am so extremely happy for both Maddy and Maggie for receiving All-American awards,” The W coach Halee Hensley said. “They have both worked hard to receive these awards. I can’t wait to see how these young ladies grow on the court in the future seasons.”
Suggs and Griggs became the first MUW volleyball players to earn USCAA all-American honors.
Women’s soccer rakes in USCAA postseason awards
PITTSBURGH — Just days after making its second-ever postseason appearance, The W women’s soccer team had five of its players receive USCAA honors.
Millie Mask (Nettleton) earned the USCAA’s prestigious student-athlete of the year award, while Adrianna Parsons (Springdale, Ark.), Molly Moore (Pascagoula), Shelby Harrington (Hattiesburg) and Loren Winters (Ocean Springs) each earned USCAA all-America accolades.
Parsons and Moore were first-team all-Americans, while Harrington and Winters were second-team honorees. Harrington was a repeat winner as a second-team all-American, also earning the nod in 2021.
Mask is the second consecutive MUW women’s soccer player to earn the USCAA student-athlete of the year honor. She joins teammate Layla Wilson, who won it in 2021. The award recognizes academics and campus/community involvement, above on-field accomplishments.
Men’s soccer lands four on all-America team
PITTSBURGH — Mississippi University for Women’s men’s soccer team was honored with four all-America awards by the USCAA.
The quartet of Owls honorees included Graham Rodney (Sumrall) and Hagan Roberts (Flowood) as first-team all-Americans, along with Jacob Vickers (Biloxi) on the second team and Tres Ray (Poplarville) as an honorable mention.
It marks the second USCAA all-American award for Vickers, both as a member of the second team.
Three of the four Owl award winners spent the bulk of their efforts in the defensive half. MUW’s team registered four shutouts in 2022 and No. 10 in the USCAA for goals against average.
