TOUGALOO — The Mississippi University for Women volleyball team capped its regular season with a 3-0 blanking of Tougaloo College at the Owens Health and Wellness Center. The Owls (8-15) caged the Bulldogs (1-14) by set scores of 25-19, 25-12 and 26-24.
The W — ranked No. 5 in the latest United States Collegiate Athletic Association poll — will now wait until Wednesday’s announcement of the USCAA championship bids to see if its 2022 season is extended. The USCAA tournament takes four at-large teams to its postseason event in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
The win also gives MUW the season sweep over the Bulldogs. The Owls topped Tougaloo, 3-1, on Oct. 4 in Columbus.
While The W outhit the Bulldogs .174 to .119 for the match, the real difference came on serves. MUW collected nine aces and had a .962 serve-receiving average as a team. Sydney Horel was a perfect 12 for 12 in receiving attempts, while libero Maddy Suggs made just one error in 22 receptions for a .957 average.
Up front, the Owls attack was led by a match-high 11 kills from Amonie Silas. Silas was efficient, as well, with a .364 attack average for the night.
Llayne Skinner and Maggie Griggs added seven and six kills, respectively. Each also had a pair of aces.
Suggs also had two aces in the match. Karmen McCrory led MUW with a trio of winning serves.
Suggs made 14 digs to top the Owls’ back row. McCrory also registered a double-figure digs total with 12.
Setter Camryn Johnson — who, like Suggs, graduated from Caledonia High School — gave a team-best 12 assists for The W.
