The Lowndes County 12U All-Star baseball team took home the championship in the Dizzy Dean Baseball World Series on Tuesday in Southaven. They went undefeated throughout the tournament, beating the Chattanooga All-Stars 4-3 in the championship game to take the trophy.
The tournament included teams from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee as the Lowndes County All-Stars proved themselves to be one of the best teams in the Southeast.
“Real close game, against a good team from Chattanooga,” Lowndes head coach James Wamble said. “It was kind of a pitchers’ duel. They had a good one up there and shut us down for the most part, but we were able to break through. Jay Wamble started the game on the mound for Lowndes, pitching for four innings before Bennett Adams came in to close out the game and see out the close win.”
The win marked Lowndes County’s fourth win of the tournament as the team came into the championship game without a single loss. Chattanooga needed to beat Lowndes twice in order to take the title themselves, but in the end they weren’t able to force a Game 2.
This isn’t the first tournament win of the summer for this group, which took home a pair of tournament wins before beginning their penultimate tournament last weekend. They won the South State Dizzy Dean championship in their age group as well as a Grand Slam state tournament, going undefeated in both events.
The team was made up of kids from Caledonia, Columbus and New Hope who will begin to play ball for their respective schools as they move on to middle school and high school. This was their last tournament together as a team, but they made their hard work count with one last win for the road.
“It was incredible,” Wamble said of the experience. “I think it’s something we’ll remember for the rest of our lives. The coaches I believe enjoyed it as much as the kids did. It was just a great year, and great to close it out with a World Series victory.”
