LEXINGTON, Ky. — For the third consecutive year, the volleyball team at the Mississippi University for Women has earned the Team Academic Award for its prowess in the classroom, it was announced. The honor is sponsored by the United States Marine Corps and presented annually by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), and it was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year to honor volleyball teams that maintain a yearlong grade point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (or 4.1 on a 5.0 scale).
In this, the 30th anniversary year of the AVCA’s Team Academic Award, the Owls team was cited on the AVCA’s Honor Roll for having placed among the top 20 percent of GPAs among the teams within their own division, as well. MUW put together a sterling 3.79 GPA for its 2021-22 roster of 20 players.
“I am so proud and thankful for the academic efforts of our volleyball program,” The W Director of Athletics Jennifer Claybrook said. “Many people do not realize the commitment it takes to be a student-athlete, especially adhering to the NCAA Division III philosophy of ‘balance’ between academics and athletics. Coach (Halee) Hensley and her team really did an excellent job in the classroom this year!”
For the 2021-22 year, a total of 1,213 programs from every collegiate level, as well as high schools, were recognized. The Owls, previously, earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons, as well.
Hensley echoed Claybrook’s praise for The W volleyball’s academic success this season. “I am super proud of how hard the team worked in the classroom. They really embodied the term ‘student-athlete.’”
