Jackson Howard went 2 for 4 with two doubles and four RBIs, but the Columbus Christian Academy baseball team lost 10-9 to Riverdale Academy in nine innings in the first game of their best-of-three MAIS Class 2A quarterfinal playoff series on Monday in Coushatta, Louisiana.
The Rebels won despite getting only four hits off of pitchers Howard and Drake Shaw. The Rams’ defense committed six errors, leading to five unearned runs.
The Rams held leads of 5-3 and 8-5 during the game, but the Rebels used a single and three hit batsmen to score the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. They had tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a walk, a stolen base and an infield error.
Howard hit a two-run double and Caleb Farlow hit an RBI triple during a four-run third inning for CCA, which put up three runs during the sixth thanks to four walks, an error and a balk.
McCory Humphreys went 3 for 4 and scored twice for the Rams, while Drake Shaw went 2 for 4 and scored two runs.
Game 2 of the series will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in Steens. Game 3, if necessary, will follow.
