Sidney Stegall had a monster day, winning the boys 800, 1,600 and 3,200 to lead the Heritage Academy boys track and field team to a second-place finish at the MAIS boys 5A North championships on Saturday at Bayou Academy.
Starkville Academy, led by Alex Friedhaber’s victory in the 110-meter hurdles, tied for third.
The host school easily took the team title with 95 points. Heritage finished with 39 points, while Starkville Academy tied Washington School for third with 29. Lamar (28), Park Place Christian (26), Simpson (14), East Rankin (12), Pillow (10) and Winston (6) completed the field.
Stegall won the 800 by more than nine seconds over Bayou’s Justin Joel, crossing in 2 minutes, 7.41 seconds to Joel’s 2:16.60. His 1,600 time of 4:39.69 outclassed the field, with Simpson’s Denver Carter taking second in 5:05.61. He comfortably won the 3,200 in 11:15.70, with Park Place’s Christopher Atkinson second in 11:33.37.
Trey Naugher was Heritage’s other winner, taking first in the 400 in 53.12 seconds, a full second ahead of Bayou’s Will Burroughs (54.13).
Naugher led off and Stegall ran the anchor leg of the second-place 4×400 relay, teaming with CJ Gathings and Luke Fisher to finish in 3:43.86. Fisher, Mitchell Woodard, Noah Madden and Gathings also took second in the 4×200 in 1:38.39.
Fisher placed individually in three events, placing sixth in the 200 (23.41), fourth in the long jump (18 feet, 6.5 inches) and third in the 110 hurdles (17.59). Wesley Miller finished fourth in the 100 (11.50) and seventh in the 110 hurdles (19.42).
Friedhaber showed his versatility in the meet. He won the 110 hurdles in 17.14, ran on the fourth-place 4×400 and placed fifth in the long jump (17-10.0) and triple jump (38-4.50).
Dylan Miller, Charlie Nicholas and Benjamin Wiley ran the 4×400 with Friedhaber. Miller led off the third-place 4×800, joining Wiley, Bentley Ferguson and Jackson Ham to finish in 9:50.95. Wiley also placed third in the 800 (2:19.77), while Nicholas finished third in the 300 hurdles (45.09) and fourth in the 110 hurdles (17.97).
Brady Johnson finished second in the long jump for the Vols, with a leap of 19-9, while Lyle finished fifth in the 200 (23.41) and Brody Bennett took sixth (115-11) and Will Lockhart took seventh (111-0) in the discus. The 4×100 team of Jackson Easton, Wyatt Buice, Camp Overstreet and Lyle finished third in 47.75.
Abby Winston’s second-place long jump of 15-10.0 and Rylee Fisher’s third-place high jump of 4-10 were the highlights for the Starkville Academy girls, who also placed seventh in the 4×800 with Summer Evans, Mary Landrum Love, Tinsley Shoemaker and Emma Winston finishing in 12:26.70
For Heritage Academy, Sophie Starks finished fourth in the 100 (13.22) and sixth in the long jump (14-8.0).
Class 4A
Bess Bryan and Rivers Bryan finished second and third, respectively, in the girls high jump and Raeley Barkely and Mary Beth Briggs did the same in the 400 meters to highlight the Oak Hill girls track team’s third-place effort at the MAIS North State Class 4A Championships on Wednesday and Saturday at Lee Academy in Clarksdale.
The Raiders finished with 37 points, trailing champion Central Holmes Christian (78.5) and Winona Christian (58) and placing just ahead of Lee (32). Kirk (23), Carroll (18.5), Rossville Christian (13), Indianola (12), Marshall (5) and North Delta (5) rounded out the field.
The Bryans each cleared 4 feet, 8 inches in their event, while Barkely finished in 1 minute, 8.15 seconds with Briggs right behind in 1:09.38.
Also finishing second for Oak Hill was the girls 4×400 relay team of Briggs, Barkely, Natalie Blanton and Caroline Flynt, which finished in 4:53.37.
Locke Myers and Blanton also recorded third-place finishes for the Raiders, with Myers taking third in the discus with a throw of 77-5 and Blanton placing third in the girls long jump in 15-4.75.
Other thirds for the Raiders included Blanton in the 100 (13.28) and the girls 4×800 team of Flynt, Lilly Rustin, Barkely and Ceirston Tarwacki (12:35.86).
Briggs and Kathryn Williams ran fourth (28.75) and fifth (29.56), respectively, in the girls 200, while Williams placed sixth in the 300 hurdles (55.79). Tarwacki finished fourth in the 800 (2:51.40, with Rustin taking eighth in 3:09.77.
Also scoring for Oak Hill, the District 1 champions, were Flynt, who finished seventh in the 1,600 (7:34.69); Mirah Amro, who took eighth in the girls 3,200 (16:20.32); and the 4×100 (56.84) and 4×200 (2:00.79) teams. Williams, Barkely, Carli Ellis and Blanton ran the former, while Jacee Ellis, Blanton, Carli Ellis and Myers ran the latter.
