Harris McReynolds went 3 for 4 with a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored, while Ayden Alsobrooks had two hits and three RBIs to lead the Starkville Academy baseball team to a 7-3 win over Pillow Academy on Tuesday in Greenwood.
Drew Williams pitched the first five innings to get the win, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and striking out four. Jackson Redmond and Wyatt Johnson each pitched an inning of scoreless relief for the Volunteers (17-3).
Marshall 15-3, Oak Hill 7-4: Jacob Mobley and Garrett Edwards each drove in two runs and four players had two hits apiece for the Raiders, who could not overcome five errors and nine walks in the second game of an MAIS Class 4A, District 1 doubleheader in West Point.
Edwards hit a two-run single during a three-run first inning for Oak Hill (10-7), and Mobley hit a two-run double during a three-run third inning. The Raiders were within 8-6 heading into the top of the sixth, but Marshall scored four runs in the sixth and three in the seventh.
Two errors and a hit batter contributed to a three-run third inning that propelled the Raiders in the opening game of their doubleheader.
Mobley and Brian Buchanan each had two of Oak Hill’s six hits.
Gunter Reed went the distance on the mound, scattering four hits, striking out eight and walking one.
Caledonia 13, Itawamba Agricultural 5: Josh Pitts went 4 for 4 with three RBIs and pitched the first six innings, striking out nine, for the Cavaliers.
Five Itawamba pitchers combined to walk nine batters as Caledonia (5-11) won despite getting only six hits. Itawamba made five errors leading to nine unearned runs.
Oxford 18, Starkville 2: The Chargers ripped six doubles among their 16 hits in a rout of the Yellow Jackets in Oxford.
Cole Kendrick’s two-run double in the top of the first was all of the scoring for Starkville (6-9). Chipper Hornburger and Brennon Wright had the only other hits for the Yellow Jackets.
Softball
New Hope 15, Columbus 0: Lexi McBrayer went 2 for 3 with a home run, four RBIs and two runs scored as the Trojans scored 10 runs during the first inning and cruised to a three-inning win over the Falcons.
Emma O’Bryant went 3 for 3 with three RBIs for New Hope (10-8-1), while Laylah Henderson and Adi Dueitt each had two hits. Dueitt, O’Bryant and Zoe Goodman each doubled, while Kensley Woolbright hit a two-run triple.
Dueitt allowed one hit and struck out eight to earn the win.
