Twelve Columbus-based soccer teams competed in the 73-team Friendly City Shootout on Saturday and Sunday at Lowndes County Soccer Complex.
Columbus Soccer Organization Director of Coaching Tom Velek said four teams from the U8 Development program and eight teams from Columbus United participated in the event, and eight of the Columbus teams were finalists in their respective age groups.
Teams that medaled included the U8 Girls, coached by Heath Serio; the U8 Boys, coached by Jerry Fross; the U9 Boys, coached by DJ Beckom; the U10 Boys, coached by Curt Rogers; the U10 Boys, coached by Curt Rogers; the U14 Boys, coached by Dave Albertson; the U12 Girls, coached by McGee Ledbetter; the U14 Girls, coached by Jake Maham; and the U16 Girls, coached by Lee Milam.
The U8 Girls split two games in pool play, registering an impressive 5-0 win over Columbus United 2 on Friday. The U12 Girls won two of three games, defeating Delta United 3-2 and IFC 2010G White 4-0.
The U14 Girls defeated Oxford FC 2009 4-1 and IFC 07/08 2-1, while the U16 Girls posted 2-1 wins over Delta Red Bulls and Southern States Soccer.
On the boys side, the U8 Boys had two squads finish 1-1 in their age group, while the U9 Boys finished in a three-way tie for second in its group, earning draws with Delta Red Bulls (3-3) and Academy 2013 (3-3). The U10 Boys won both games in pool play, defeating Alliance FC 12 2-0 and Delta United 2-1.
