Mike Leach and Mississippi State are starting to capitalize on the NCAA transfer portal.
The Bulldogs landed two Power Five players within three hours of each other on Tuesday, bolstering their 2022 roster at positions of need.
First, West Virginia cornerback Jackie Matthews announced his commitment to Mississippi State. Matthews, a product of Birmingham, Alabama, played high school football at Pinson Valley before heading to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College for the 2018 and 2019 seasons.
Matthews, who will be a redshirt senior in 2022, finished with 44 tackles (6.5 for loss), a sack and three pass breakups in 2021 for the Mountaineers. He announced his transfer Jan. 2.
The Bulldogs added wide receiver Jordan Mosley from Northwestern on Tuesday afternoon. Mosley played just one season with the Wildcats.
The former four-star prospect out of McGill-Toolen High School in Mobile, Alabama, had one catch for seven yards at Northwestern but can play a much bigger role in Starkville. The Bulldogs recently lost star wide receiver Makai Polk to the NFL draft and have plenty of passes to catch in Leach’s Air Raid scheme.
Mississippi State’s 2022 season begins Sept. 3 against Memphis at Davis Wade Stadium.
