The Mississippi College women’s basketball team set the school record for 3-pointers in a game in a rout of the Mississippi University for Women on Wednesday, Dec. 8. The Choctaws (6-3) popped 12 treys in the game as it defeated the “W”, 108-38, inside A.E. Wood Coliseum.
The previous record was 10, which was matched by four different MC squads, the last coming from the 2009-10 edition against Concordia University of Texas.
The 70-point victory is the largest this season as it surpassed the 56-point win against Southeastern Baptist College on Nov. 11.
It’s the first time MC has reached the century mark since returning to the Gulf South Conference and Division II. The last time the program scored 100-plus points was Jan. 9, 2014 against Sul Ross State (120-77).
“Awesome team win tonight and it was great to see everyone contribute,” said head coach Greg Long. “We looked like a team this is continuing to grow and compete for each other and that is what we keep preaching. It’s short lived through as we now refocus and prepare to return to GSC play at the University of Montevallo this weekend.”
Ally Alford tied a season-high with 21 points as she knocked down five 3-pointers in the game. Kyiah Julian added 16 points, while going 4-for-8 from behind the arc. Amelia Bell and NeNe Williams provided 12 apiece and Alana Canady closed out the double-digit scorers with 10 points. Williams and Tamarah Sykes led the way on the glass with six boards each.
The Choctaws shot 54.3 percent from the field in the contest, included a clip of 52.2 from behind the arc during the record-setting night. The squad also pulled down 38 boards to hold a plus-nine, rebounding margin. MC has out-rebounded its last seven opponents and has registered
The Navy and Gold held the Owls to single-digit scoring in three of the four quarters during the performance. MUW scored 13 points in the second quarter. The Choctaws’ 31 points in the second marked the most in a quarter this season while the 25 in the third tied the most scored in a third quarter and the 25 in the fourth surpassed the previous high of 22 scored at Lane College.
Holding a 58-22 advantage at the break, MC extended its leading at the half streak as the squad has yet to trail at the intermission this season. The first-half, point total also marked the most points scored in the first 20 minutes of play this season as it passed the previous mark of 52 against SBC.
