Two Columbus United Soccer Club teams earned championships and another finished second at the prestigious Crossroads of the South soccer tournament Nov. 6-7 in Jackson.
The United U12 girls team, coached by McGee Ledbetter and Gregg Twietmeyer, played Hattiesburg Storm to a 5-5 draw in the first match of the tournament before losing a close 1-0 match to MS Rush Jackson Elite. A convincing 3-0 victory over MS Rush Madison Elite propelled the team into a championship match with IFC White.
The team’s defense showed up again, recording its second shutout of the weekend in a 4-0 win to take home gold.
The U10 girls, coached by Ledbetter and Jim Hicks, brought home gold as well. The team marched through the tournament recording four wins in impressive fashion, outscoring opponents 19-3.
The team defeated Cannon Soccer Club 3-2, IFC Grey 5-0 and MFC Rush 6-0 to earn a berth in the championship match, where they met IFC again and won 5-1.
The U12 boys, coached by Jim Hicks and Jamie Baucom, defeated BFC Elite 3-1 before losing to a stout Brilla Juniors team by a score of 4-1. The team got an opportunity to avenge the loss when it met the Brilla team again in the semifinals, this time coming away with a 3-2 win.
