Freshman Aubrey Baughman recorded 2 goals and 2 assists, while senior Leah Anderson scored twice Sunday to lead the Mississippi University for Women’s women’s soccer team to a rousing 10-0 win over Oakwood at Lowndes County Soccer Complex.
The 10 goals marked the most scored by the Owls since a 14-0 rout of Welch College on Oct. 12, 2019.
The Owls outshot the Ambassadors 23-0 and put 16 of those shots on goal.
.“Today was a good win for us,” The W coach Catie Lyles said. “All of our healthy players saw game time today. We had several different players score in the game. All of the girls kept positive attitudes and cheered each other on.”
Marian Beckom and Haven Tuggle of Columbus also scored for the Owls, as did Sarah Havens, Elizabeth Holland, Adrianna Parsons and Millie Mask.
The Owls (2-1) will be back at home Wednesday against Huntingdon College, then head to Memphis on Sunday to face Rhodes College.
We have two big games coming up this week and will begin work in the morning to prepare ourselves to be the best we can,” Lyles said.

Lopes hat trick fuels Owls
Freshman Vini Lopes, the current USCAA men’s soccer Player of the Week, scored three first-half goals to lead the Mississippi University for Women’s men’s soccer team to a 5-1 victory at home over Oakwood.
Lopes recorded his second hat trick of the season by scoring goals during the 30th, 33rd and 43rd minutes, getting assists from Stephon Walker and Josh Martin on the second goal and from Walker again on the third.
The W added some second-half insurance as Paulo Carneiro tallied just more than a minute into the second half and Joao Schroeder capped the scoring during the 88th minute with the assist from Reggi Pech.
After allowing an early goal to the Ambassadors, the Owls’ defense settled in and permitted Oakwood just two more shots the rest of the match. McCutchen finished with one save, while The W unleashed 30 shot attempts, 15 on goal.
“We didn’t play our best soccer today,” The W coach Louis Alexander said. “However, I’m happy we got the win. Even more so, we got the win in front of a home crowd. Hopefully, we can use this as a positive and a learning opportunity for the rest of our season.”
