The Starkville High baseball team has a lot of work ahead if it wants to keep its season afloat.
The Yellow Jackets fell 14-1 Thursday to Madison Central in their MHSAA Class 6A series opener on the road. Starkville scored the first run of the game off an Ethan Pulliam RBI in the first inning, but Madison Central responded with an eight-run inning in the bottom frame.
Madison Central added four more runs in the third and two in the fourth before having the game called due to the mercy rule. In the contest, Madison Central had 12 hits, while Starkville had one hit and committed three errors.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action for Game 2 at 7 p.m. Friday in Starkville. Starkville will have to win Friday to send the series to a winner-take-all Game 3.
