Noxubee County (2-0) dropped from second to third in the MHSAA Class 3A rankings in this week’s Associated Press Mississippi high school football poll, released Tuesday.
Nine Mississippi media outlets, including The Commercial Dispatch, were polled on the top five teams in each class and the top 10 overall. Teams earned 10 points for a first-place vote, nine for a second-place vote and so on.
The Tigers, who received The Dispatch’s first-place vote, beat Philadelphia 33-13 last week but were jumped by Columbia (2-0) for second place in Class 3A. Jefferson Davis County (2-0) remained in first place with six of the eight first-place votes in the class.
Magee (1-0) and West Marion (1-1) rounded out the top five.
Noxubee County will travel to face West Point (1-1) on Friday.
In other polls
— Starkville (2-0) remained the No. 1 team in the state overall but lost its unanimous standing as the top team in MHSAA Class 6A. Oak Grove (2-0) earned a first-place vote in both the overall and Class 6A polls. South Panola (2-0), Madison Central (2-0) and Warren Central (2-0) rounded out the top five. The Yellow Jackets (2-0) will host Meridian (0-2) on Friday.
— West Point (1-1) was still the top-ranked team in Class 5A and No. 4 overall. The Green Wave beat Tupelo 24-14 on the road Friday after losing to Starkville 40-28 in Week 1. In Class 5A, West Point received six first-place votes, and second-place West Jones (2-0) received two. Picayune (2-0) and Neshoba Central (2-0) tied for third place, and Lafayette (1-1) was fifth.
— Heritage Academy (3-1) remained the fourth-ranked team among private schools. The Patriots beat Caledonia 28-21 on Friday. Madison-Ridgeland Academy (seven first-place votes) was the top-ranked private school team and No. 7 in the overall rankings. Jackson Prep (3-0) was second, Leake Academy (4-0) was third, and Greenville Christian (2-0) was fifth among private schools. Heritage Academy will host Bayou Academy (3-1) on Friday.
