The Lowndes Recreation Department has closed its recreation facilities as of Monday and until at least April 1 due to concerns about the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, the department announced Monday afternoon.
Lake Lowndes State Park Ball Fields, Lowndes Soccer Complex, Anderson Grove Community Center, Artesia Community Center, Caledonia Community Center, Charles Chambry Community Center, Concord Community Center, Crawford Community Center, New Hope Community Center and Plum Grove Community Center will temporarily closed. The department noted the facilities could be closed past April 1 if deemed necessary.
All youth softball and baseball practices, all soccer games and practices, all recreation programs and all park facility rentals have been suspended. People who have paid to rent park facilities will be refunded in approximately three weeks.
The department said it will reevaluate the status of its baseball and softball programs on April 1 and is not currently canceling the season. If the department is allowed to reopen its sites and programs, the start of the season will be pushed back a week or two; if the season is closed entirely, all registration and sponsorship fees will be returned “in a timely manner.”
“We ask for your patience and understanding during these very unprecedented and trying times,” the department’s statement read. “Please keep you and your families safe.”
