PEARL — The Golden Triangle had three individuals win gold medals Saturday at the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 5A State Outdoor Track and Field meet.
Starkville High School’s Kate Mattox and Damian Grady each won two events, while New Hope High’s Mercedes Mattix won the 400 meters.
Mattox took first in the 3,200 (11 minutes, 13.38 seconds) and the 1,600 (5:15). Grady won the 1,600 (4:40.82) and the 800 (2:00.17). Mattix won her event in a time of 58.27.
The New Hope High girls (53 points) edged Starkville (52) for fourth place. Pearl won the girls title with 123.5 points. Oxford was second with 74.5.
Canton (89 points) won the Class 5A boys meet. Oxford (76) was second and Pearl (72) was third. Starkville was fifth with 47 points, New Hope (13) was 16th, and West Point High (8.5) was 19th.
Other Class 5A girls finishers were: Starkville’s Walker Mattox (second in the 3,200, 12:23.62; third in the 1,600, 5:38.36), Mary Elizabeth Stringer (seventh in the 800, 2:40.14), Ralesheia Gee (second in the long jump, 17-7), New Hope’s Kennedi Sanders (second in the 100 hurdles, 15.76; third in the 300 hurdles, 48.5; fourth in the high jump, 4 feet, 8 inches; and fifth in the triple jump, 33-1), Mattix (fifth in the 100, 12.25; second in the 200, 25.25), the 4×200 relay team (sixth, 1:47.26), Shanae Hunt (fifth in the 400, 1:02.42; eighth in the 200, 27.04), and West Point’s Fantasia Shelton (seventh in the high jump, 4-6).
Other Class 5A boys finishers were: Starkville’s Alex Ross (second in the 3,200 (10:11.28), Ethan Musser (sixth in the 1,600, time unavailable), the 4×400 relay team (third, 3:28.22), Alan Nichols (fifth in the high jump, 6-0), and Charlie Henderson (third in the pole vault, 13-0), New Hope’s Silvanus Johnson (second in the 800 (2:01.12) and James Hill (fourth in the triple jump (43-11 1/2), and West Point’s Peair Howard (fourth in the 100, 10.83), Isaiah Tallie (eighth in the 300 hurdles, 42.39), and Ariontae Warren (sixth in the high jump, 5-8).
In Class 1A, West Lowndes High’s Eric Harris was seventh in the 100 (11.71), Joshua King was sixth in the 400 (54.69), Shaquille Sharp was fourth in the 200 (23.23), and Micheal Williams was sixth in the long jump (20-3/4) and fourth in the high jump (6-0). West Lowndes finished 20th with 20 points. Hinds AHS won the Class 1A boys title (137).
In Class 3A, Aberdeen High’s Aaliyah Gillespie was eighth in the 100 (13.14), seventh in the 400 (1:03.92), and seventh in the 200 (27.05). Bob Ward was fifth in the shot put (41-9) for the Aberdeen boys.
The Class 2A, Class 4A, and Class 6A meets will be today.
