VERNON, Ala. — The Lamar County and Sulligent high school football teams mixed a little more offense into their Alabama High School Activities Association Class 2A, Region 4 matchup Friday night.
Still, the result was to the Bulldogs’ liking.
After taking a 6-3 victory last season, Lamar County again rode a sturdy defense to an 18-14 victory at George Bell Stadium.
Lamar County (3-1, 2-1 region) was paced by Dallas Cockerham. The junior quarterback ran for 72 yards, while scoring on a 3-yard touchdown run and pair of 1-yard runs. Alex Wheeler rushed 14 times for 56 yards.
Defensively, Ryan Barham had six tackles for the Bulldogs. Dusty Vann and Landon Williams each added interceptions.
Sulligent (1-3, 1-2) was led by Deion Jenkins, who had 114 rushing yards. Jenkins scored on touchdown runs of 41 and 14 yards. Jessie Keller had nine tackles for the Blue Devils.
Both teams step out of region play next week. Lamar County will travel to Berry, while Sulligent will play host to Fayette County.
n Pickens County 46, Brilliant 0: At Brilliant, Ala., Sophomore Jemarcus Brown had has coming out party for the Tornadoes in Class 1A, Region 5 play.
Brown ran for 154 yards and five touchdowns. He also added another score on a 61-yard punt return. The other score for Pickens County (4-0, 3-0) was a 41-yard fumble return by Justin Barton.
Defensively, the Tornadoes have taken region play by storm. The Tornadoes have posted back-to-back shutouts and only allowed one touchdown in three region victories.
Pickens County can clinch a playoff spot by winning two of its next four region games. Meanwhile, the Tornadoes will step outside of region play Friday night for a potential offensive shootout with Aliceville.
n Aliceville 63, Cold Springs 12: At Breman, Ala., The Yellow Jackets also have taken their offensive performance to another level in Class 2A, Region 4 play.
Jeremy McMullen led Aliceville (3-1, 3-0) with 202 rushing yards. The 5-foot-11 sophomore scored three touchdowns.
Quarterback Jocarious Spruill threw for 364 yards and four touchdowns. Spruill found Joe Robinson for touchdown passes of 39 and 31 yards. Robinson led the team five receptions for 200 yards. S.J. Washington had two receptions for 120 yards, including a touchdown. Christopher Crowell caught the other touchdown.
Aliceville has scored 39 or more points in each of its three region victories. The Yellow Jackets are averaging 41 points per game.
Aliceville will step outside of region play for a home game against Pickens County on Friday night.
n Lynn 27, South Lamar 0: At Millport, Ala., The Stallions saw their winless streak reach four games in a Class 1A, Region 5 home loss.
Dakota Bell led the Bears (3-1, 2-1) with four touchdowns. Bell scored on runs of 8 and 2 yards. He was also on the receiving end of touchdown passes covering 20 and 21 yards from quarterback Broady Meeks.
South Lamar was shut out for the second time this season. It will remain in region play Friday when it plays host to Hubbertville.
n Pickens Academy 54, Eastwood Christian 6: At Carrollton, Ala., The Pirates scored 40 first-quarter points before cruising to victory in Alabama Independent Schools Association Class A, Region 2 play.
For the Pirates (5-0, 3-0), Joel Pratt and Garrett Estes each had two rushing touchdowns. Pratt scored on runs of 45 and 46 yards, while Estes scored on runs of 8 and 14 yards. Quarterback Josh Lewis scored on a 61-yard run and also found Reese McGlown for an 18-yard scoring play. Pratt had 100 yards on three carries. The Pirates rushed for 308 yards on 32 carries, and had 326 total yards.
Hunter Booth added a 6-yard touchdown run, while Andrew McElroy scored from 1 yard out.
Lewis finished with 99 rushing yards. Cody Scott and Caleb Carr each had four tackles apiece to pace the defense. Scott and McElroy had interceptions, and Austin McCool, Chase Britt, and Chanse Britt had sacks.
After winning three games last season, Pickens Academy can clinch a winning season Friday night with another region game at Jackson Academy.
