Pickens Academy 41, Marengo Academy 17: At Dixons Mills, the Pirates rolled to an easy victory in their final regular-season game before the Alabama Independent School Association Class 2A playoffs next week.
Pickens Academy (6-4, 3-3 region) will take on Clarke Prep in Grove Hill on Friday.
“They are probably the best team in 2A,” Pickens Academy coach John Gartman said about next week”s opponent. “They are very physical.”
Gartman got the chance to rest his starters after the Pirates built a 41-3 lead midway through the second quarter.
Although the backups held on, Gartman still hoped for a better performance.
“It really burns me to see them score two touchdowns,” he said. “I was glad to rest our starters going into the playoffs.”
Jacob Acker, who accounted for two passing touchdowns and one rushing, scampered 62 yards for the Pirates” first score. John Morgan Owens followed with a 9-yard run, and Joel Pratt”s 13-yard scoring pass from Acker ended the first-quarter Pirates” offensive assault. Marengo Academy”s only points in the first half came on a 25-yard field goal by Chris Simmons.
In the second quarter, Owens tacked on an 18-yard touchdown run. Judson Smith caught a 21-yard scoring pass from Acker, and Brad Lowery scored on a 1-yard scoring dive before halftime.
Matt Etheridge scored both of Marengo Academy”s second-half touchdowns — a 15-yard run in the third quarter and a 36-yard run in the fourth quarter.
