A back-and-forth fourth quarter resulted in a big home win for the Southern Miss women’s basketball team against visiting Ole Miss on Tuesday in Hattiesburg.
The Eagles (4-1) used a 7-0 run in the middle of the quarter to storm back and take the lead. They held on for a 59-53 victory.
“What a great basketball game,” Southern Miss head coach Joye Lee-McNelis said in a news release from the school. “Unbelievable basketball game by two very, very good basketball teams early in the year. We were just fortunate enough to be able to win.”
Senior Shonte Hailes scored 17 points for Southern Miss, making 7 of 12 field goals.
For the Rebels (2-2), Dominique Banks had 13 points, and Jayla Alexander had 11.
The Eagles will kick off the Lady Eagle Classic in Hattiesburg with their next game, a Nov. 29 contest against Mississippi Valley State.
Ole Miss’ next game is at 2 p.m. Saturday against Louisiana Tech in Oxford.
