The East Mississippi Community College men’s rodeo team took home the team title at the Southern Arkansas University Intercollegiate Rodeo from Thursday to Saturday in Magnolia, Arkansas.
The Lions edged Missouri Valley College to win the men’s event 610 points to 580. Sophomores Weston Pender and Clay Green combined for 290 team points with a time of 6.6 seconds in the second round of the roping event.
Sophomore Myles Neighbors finished second in steer wrestling and received 150 points. Neighbors had times of 5.8 and 4.8 seconds, and he also picked up 20 points in the tie down roping event.
Freshman Sam Morgan got the Lions 150 points with a tie for third place in team roping (90 points) and a tie for fourth place in steer wrestling (60 points).
The women’s team placed third behind host Southern Arkansas and Arkansas-Monticello, scoring 180 team points to beat out Missouri Valley.
Freshman Jaylie Matthews scored 110 points for EMCC with a tie for third in the barrel racing competition after winning the first round with a time of 15.41 seconds. Matthews is the second-ranked barrel racer in the International Professional Rodeo Association.
The Lions will finish their fall season at Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky, from Nov. 21-23.
