Be a friend

Saggy pants are a fad, a fashion craze. I think it’s crazy, but it’s an in-your-face expression of rebellion. I find it disgusting and highly offensive. I would like to carry a can of lighter fluid around to squirt on the seats of nasty underwear exposed to view, but unfortunately my right to be offended stops at everybody else’s nose.

Helping hands I have always known Columbus to be helpful and friendly, but I must tell you of two recent ones I experienced. On Wednesday,

Why celebrate Confederate Memorial Day, indeed?
Voice of the people: Anne Carlsson
Many thanks to Officer Bo Pearson for helping me!
Voice of the people: Gary Holtman
There has been a big hullabaloo in the news lately about the Secret Service agents and their liaisons with prostitutes in a foreign country. These people are supposed to be well-educated and intelligent, even before being educated.
A letter from the chief
To the Citizens of Columbus:
I am humbled by the honor to lead one of the best and brightest police departments in the State of Mississippi. Anyone who reads the paper and sees the news shouldn’t be surprised that our department has been tested and criticized in recent months.

Starkville to host public meeting on historic register designation
The Starkville Central Neighborhood Foundation is pushing for a National Register of Historic Places nomination for Starkville’s downtown district which, if approved, would give property owners in the proposed district access to significant tax incentives for renovations and purchases.
Brenda Caradine: ‘Renaissance man’
Kudos to Jan Swoope. What a wonderful article Wednesday about local author Michael Smith’s success in the literary world in New York, publication of his latest book and movie deal in the works.

Celebrate Starkville public schools.
John D. Acker: Appreciates positive Dispatch
A rose and a “thank you” to The Commercial Dispatch for a wonderful change (from my perspective).
Cameron Triplett: Doing what’s right for children and society
There is no one simple cure-all answer to the problem of welfare children.
Cameron Triplett: The ‘R’ word
I find it disgusting that some think that racism still exists to the extent that when someone doesn’t get their way, their opponent of another race must automatically be racist.
Selvain McQueen: Aggrieved by thorn
In 1776, Thomas Jefferson wrote a well-known document, “The Declaration of Independence,” in which he summarized the ideals of individual liberty that had been expressed by John Locke and the Continental philosophers. Jefferson set forth a list of grievances against the king in order to justify, before the world, the breaking of ties between the colonies and the mother country.
Claude Simpson: Moonshine, a business opportunity
The article and column in Sunday’s paper about the fellows who got caught making moonshine was very interesting and further shows how economic development is stifled in our state.
Letter to the Editor: Supports Romney
It is very exciting that the presidential primary in Mississippi is important this year. Because the nomination has yet to be decided, we have an opportunity to help elect the next Republican nominee. Mississippi citizens should take this very seriously.
Martin M. Pomphrey Jr. M.D.: Concerned season ticket holder
This baseball season at MSU brings a new student entity to campus, The Dudes.
Heath Fisackerly : An open letter to the superintendent
My name is Heath Fisackerly and I am a sophomore at Columbus High School. I am extremely disappointed in the board’s decision to terminate the contracts of teachers throughout the district. I was at the board meeting Monday the 12th of February and I couldn’t understand a word being said.
