Domestic affairs take center stage in Iran
Last November, the government of Iran increased gasoline prices by 50 percent. Protests erupted all over the nation. The Republican Guard responded by killing hundreds of protesters, recalling the violence against protesters in 1978 that brought down the Shah. The current protests were followed by even wider protests at the shooting down of a Ukrainian airliner full of Iranian citizens. The situation may be serious enough that the Ayatollah will fall.
None of this has anything to do with U.S. action. There has been no change in Iranian attitudes toward the United States. “Death to America” has had to take a back seat to domestic affairs, but when the smoke clears, it will still be there. Mr. Trump’s “excellent leadership” has had no effect on that.
