Thank you, Glenn Lautzenhiser, for your wonderful column about the passing of Vin Scully, long-time Dodger baseball announcer. I grew up a Dodger fan and it is Scully’s voice that permeated so much of my childhood and, thankfully, much of my adult life as well. Vin not only taught fans the game of baseball but how to be a better human; his stories about ballplayers were as much about life as they were about the sport that Scully, more than anyone else, caused us to fall in love with. One definitely got that sense from reading this column.
I especially appreciated learning of Scully’s and the Dodgers’ gracious contribution to the Columbus celebration of Columbus’s own Red Barber, Scully’s predecessor and mentor. Mr. Lautzenhiser’s thoughtful article is further testimony to the true greatness of Vin Scully, whose warmth, humility, and kindness exceeded even his unique status as the greatest sports announcer of all time.
