I must take exception to the January 20 inflammatory headline regarding the change of leadership at Heritage Academy: “Carlyle out as Heritage headmaster.” (By the way, should not the “h” in headmaster have been capitalized?) While Dr. Carlyle is no longer the headmaster, the tone of the headline evoked “yellow dog” journalism and does not show respect for an educator who has served students in Mississippi for 27 years. “Heritage Academy confirms change in leadership” would have been a more appropriate headline. I can assure you that most of your readers do not require flashy headlines to continue to subscribe to and to read your newspaper.
As I have told you many times, I am appreciative of your and your family’s continuing to publish a daily newspaper in Columbus. We are fortunate that we DO have a daily paper in a town our size. I do think that Dr. Carlyle deserved more respect than the headline evoked.
Eulalie H. Davis, Columbus
Editor’s note: We agree. The headline, while not factually incorrect, was too blunt for the article. We regret the tone it communicated and have changed it online.
