I am writing about two local non-profit organizations that are close to my heart: Safe Haven Domestic Violence Shelter and 100 Women Who Care — Columbus Mississippi. In the spring of 2021, one benefited greatly from the generosity of the other.
Safe Haven provides emergency shelter and crisis intervention for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault (and their children). Safe Haven’s victim services range from temporary housing to professional crisis counseling. This shelter in Columbus operates on a shoe string, but provides services for ten counties in our area of Mississippi, including Lowndes County. You can learn more details about the organization at www.uwlc-ms.org/safe-haven.
100 Women Who Care is a local branch of a national organization with a simple structure. A group of women agree to give $100 each twice a year in order to give cash donations to two local organizations. These donations are the sole reason for 100 Women Who Care’s existence. The members nominate local organizations they believe should receive an Impact Award. Then the members vote to determine who will be the recipient of the two Impact Awards per year. One hundred percent of the donations from members goes to the chosen organizations. One hundred percent of the membership’s donations stays in Lowndes County, Mississippi.
Last Spring I nominated Safe Haven, and was thrilled to learn that the organization was selected to receive one of this year’s Impact Awards. Because our 100 Women Who Care group has many more members than the 100 required for operation, Safe Haven’s donation check was well over $17,000. I know how much good this local domestic violence shelter does for victims and their children. I know personally people whose lives have been changed because they called Safe Haven for help. When I let the director know about the Impact Award, she told me that it would allow them to add more space and more services immediately, and that expansion was desperately needed.
I invite you to visit 100 Women Who Care — Columbus, Mississippi’s website at www.100wwccolumbusms.org/become-a-member and consider joining our group. You will not regret it. The satisfaction you’ll receive in giving immediate help to a worthy local organization is immense. The impact you can make is direct and powerful.
