A rose to the Golden Triangle Development LINK for its efforts to facilitate discussions about how our communities can best deal with tax revenue loses being caused by shelter in place orders. While the Starkville Board of Aldermen has made cuts of almost $800,000 in anticipation of a projected $1.3 million in tax revenue losses, other cities and counties have yet to announce any firm plans. On Friday, LINK officials hosted a conference call with local governments designed to achieve several things — assess the issues more clearly, develop strategies to mitigate the losses and provide information on related issues. We applaud the LINK’s leadership in this effort.
A rose to four West Point hospital workers who have responded to the threat of COVID-19 in an innovative way. North Mississippi Medical Center employees Howard Rumore, Keight White, Jamie Snell and Van Smith, all of whom work in the hospital’s facility operations department have built croup tents — used decades ago to treat patients with respiratory diseases — to help protect doctors and nurses from exposure to COVID-19. Based on the West Point employees’ design, 25 new croup tents have been made and distributed throughout the hospital’s facilities in Amory, Eupora, Iuka, Pontotoc and Hamilton, Alabama. We applaud the ingenuity of these workers for helping adapt an old technology to help with a current problem.
