Disagrees with letter-writer
Mr. Jiben Roy often has a unique perspective on various topics, but I think his views on firearms are way off base. I agree that “bump stocks” should be banned. They are mainly toys for those who want to play army on weekends in the woods. Who can afford to burn that much ammo just for fun?
It’s true that if you kill someone, you can run but you can’t hide forever, but banning guns WILL NOT stop murders from happening, not even mass murders. All it will do is make law-abiding citizens more easily robbed and killed by criminals. Banning guns will only create two things: a black market for guns and another class of criminals. Look at Prohibition and how well that worked for banning alcohol.
In his letter Mr. Roy says, “If you don’t have a gun, you can’t kill. Killing never serves your purpose.” Both statements are in error. You don’t NEED a gun to kill. Al Capone used a baseball bat to beat a man to death. One of the Kennedy clan used a golf club to kill a teenaged girl. A fist can kill just as dead as an atomic bomb. Killing CAN serve your purpose, if it’s lawful. A “crazy man” shooting up a shopping mall full of shoppers, and a citizen with a concealed carry permit can stop him. That SAVES lives.
The only law that will even begin to do some good will never be passed in this liberal climate. If a gun is used in the commission of a violent crime, enhance the penalty. If it’s fired, more enhancement. If a person or other animal is injured, more enhancement. If a death occurs, execution within a year of conviction. No “execution cocktails,” either. Death by firing squad or hanging, done in public and televised. Send a message to criminals, not to law-abiding citizens.
