A rose to organizers, volunteers and supporters of Camp With a Mission, a day camp for people with special needs. Monday marks the beginning of the camp’s second year at Stark Creation Center on the Mississippi State campus and will feature a range of activities, including swimming, arts/crafts and other fun activities for those who are often left out of traditional camp experiences because of their special needs.
The six-day camp is open for ages 12 and over and its present by the nonprofit organization “Special Needs, Special Spirit.” We applaud all efforts to extend to those with special needs the opportunities others routinely enjoy. If you would like to support this worthy effort, call Norma Jones at 662 352-3184 or Ann Shelton at 662 549-1683
A rose to the Mississippi University for Women Culinary Arts department for its month-long “Culinary Camp for Kids,” which ended Friday.
While kids learned specific techniques and strategies during the week-long camps, we are convinced the lessons have benefits that will endure for a lifetime.
When children are introduced to cooking, they are far more likely to be aware of a healthy diet and making the right choices. It is not uncommon that the poorest communities are also the most obese — proof positive that many people are not able to distinguish between foods that are healthy and nutritious and those which are empty calories and unhealthy. There is an old saying that if you cut your own firewood, it warms you twice. We believe the same principle applies with food. Homemade meals are less expensive and, when combined with an understanding of nutrition, a far healthier option.
A rose to Golden Triangle Regional Airport Executive Director Mike Hainsey for his appointment to the Board of Directors for the Aerospace Alliance by Gov. Phil Bryant. The Aerospace Alliance is a multi-state organization designed to establish the Southeast region as a world-class aerospace and aviation corridor. Hainsey will join with business and economic development professionals to represent Mississippi as the Alliance continues to help bring aerospace and aviation industry to the state. During his tenure at the GTR Airport the area has seen unprecedented growth, including the establishment of three major aerospace companies on the airport property. We believe Hainsey’s appointment will be a great asset to the regional airports throughout the area.
