William Brown

William Davis “Bill” Brown, 87, died May 21, 2009, at Starkville Manor Nursing Home in Starkville. Services are Friday at 1 p.m. at Living Manna Church in West Point with the Revs. Joe W. Brown and R.H. Brown officiating. Visitation is Thursday from 5-7 p.m. at Carter Funeral Home in West Point. Mr. Brown was a Pentecostal and was affiliated with Church of God in Christ and previously with Manna Church in West Point. He attended grammar school in Noxubee County. When he was young, he sang with two gospel quartets in Oktibbeha County. He was a member of the U.S. Army, served in the Philippines during World War II and reached the rank of corporal. He was honorably discharged and began a career in construction with companies in Memphis, Tenn., Hanesville, Ala., and Columbus. He also worked local jobs at B&W, Bryan Packing House and with the city of West Point. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ennis and Mary Francis Jefferson Brown; 13 siblings; and daughters, Gertrude Corrine Brown and Katrina Brown Mitchell. He is survived by his wife, the Rev. Elvie Corrine Williams Brown of West Point; sons, the Rev. Joe W. Brown of Cleveland, Tenn., and James W. and John D. Brown, both of West Point; daughters, Janie L. Hudson of Garfield Heights, Ohio, and the Rev. Johnnie Ruth Brown of West Point; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
