CARROLLTON, Ala. — Walter Waymon Curry Jr., 86, died March 13, 2009, at his residence. Services are Monday at 11 a.m. at Carrollton Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy Winders officiating. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to service time at the church. Burial will follow at Carrollton City Cemetery. Visitation is today from 4-6 p.m. at Dogwood Chapel. Mr. Curry was born Jan. 23, 1923, in Carrollton to the late Walter Waymon Curry Sr. and Hazel Owings Curry. He was a graduate of Carrollton High School and attended Mississippi State University on a football scholarship. He was a infantry sergeant in the U.S. Army in World War II. He worked as a Ford dealer, supervisor of transportation for Pickens County Schools, and worked with the First State Bank of Carrollton. He served two terms as mayor of Carrollton and two terms on the Pickens County Commission. He was a lifelong active member of Carrollton Baptist Church. He was also a active volunteer and leader for the Lions Club, the Carrollton Improvement Association, Carrollton High School and Pickens Academy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Annie Laura Clanahan; and one grandson. He is survived by his wife, Thrath Cobb Curry of Carrollton; son, William Alton Curry of Birmingham, Ala.; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Jim Clanahan, C.C. Cox Sr., Butch Hildreth, Marvin Kilpatrick, Millard Latham, Joe Lewis, McArthur Prude and George Whitley. Memorials may be made to the Pickens County Medical Center Foundation, P.O.
