Verbon Taggart Atkins. 77, of Columbus, MS passed away Monday February 16, 2009 at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, MS. Services will be held at Aliceville First United Methodist Church on Thursday, February 19th at 11:00 am with the Rev. Roger Short and the Rev. Steve Carraway officiating. Burial will follow at Magnolia Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Wednesday, February 18, 2009 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Dogwood Chapel, 200 5th Street, NE in Aliceville, AL. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to service at the church. Skelton Funeral Home of Reform is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Atkins was born February 14, 1932 in the Liberty community of Pickens County, Alabama to the late Lewis Atkins and Ada Key Youngblood Atkins. He was a graduate of the University of Alabama, a retired county administrator for the Pickens County Commission and a member of Aliceville First United Methodist Church. Verbon was a member of the Hamasa Shrine Temple of Meridian, Mississippi for 50 years and a member of the Carrollton Masonic Lodge #214. Mr. Atkins is preceded in death by his parents; brother- Hillman Atkins and son – Joe Mason. Mr. Atkins is survived by his wife – Ann Atkins of Columbus, MS; daughter – Sherrill Culpepper (Glynn) of Columbus, MS;daughter-in-law – Debbie Elmore (Mike) of Carrollton, AL; sisters – Mildred Hudson of Columbus, MS and Fannie Mae Kellum of Starkville, MS; brothers – Donald Atkins (Ann) of Columbus, MS and Orman Atkins (Agnes) of Reform, AL; five grandchildren – Ashley, Victoria and Sarah Margaret Culpupper, Jody Mason and Chase Elmore. Pallbearers will be David Law, Joe Atkins, Mike Elmore, Glynn Culpepper, Ralph Youngblood and Harold Youngblood. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Masonic Lodge #214 and the Couples Sunday School Class of Aliceville First united Methodist Church.
