Rommay Fay Hatcher, 83, peacefully passed away on October 4, 2022, at her home in Columbus, Mississippi.
Funeral services will be Friday, October 7, 2022, at 11:00 AM at Memorial Gunter Peel Chapel, with Rev. Melvin Mordecai officiating. The interment will immediately follow at Friendship Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until the time of the service.
Mrs. Hatcher was born December 4, 1938, to Kenneth Dunn, Sr., and Ruby Gladys Moody Dunn.
Mrs. Hatcher was a faithful wife, mother, and grandmother. She married her childhood sweetheart, Harry Udell Hatcher, on November 8, 1954, shortly after he entered the Air Force. They were married for nearly 67 years, and it was rare to see one without the other.
They lived in many places over their 22 years of military service. Guam was among the most memorable locations Mr. and Mrs. Hatcher called “home” before finally retiring in Columbus so that they could be near family and friends, which both Mr. and Mrs. Hatcher considered to be a priority.
Until 2020, they opened their home on Thanksgiving and Christmas for their family to gather and share a holiday meal, providing an array of relatives and occasionally, friends—a chance to pause, connect, and create memories. The gatherings were famous for her from-scratch steak and gravy recipe as well as her homemade chocolate pie.
Mrs. Hatcher is survived by her four children, Dell, Debbie, Steve (Mitzi) and Lee (Lenora); and several dear friends and family members, including cousins, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She always wanted to know, “Are the kids okay?” Even as she aged, Mrs. Hatcher showed a purity of heart, a devotion to God and a sincere care about others that was timeless. Her gentle presence will be greatly missed.
