Roger Leon Short, 72, of Columbus, MS, passed away Thursday, October 6, 2022, at Baptist Memorial Hospital – Golden Triangle.
Visitation will be from 2:00 – 4:00 PM, Saturday, October 8, 2022, at Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS. A memorial service will follow at 4:00 PM in Lowndes Funeral Home Chapel, with Bro. Breck Ladd officiating.
Roger was born on December 29, 1949, in Quinton, AL, to the late Overton Lee Short and Ollie Aubrey Harrell Short. He was a family man who married the love of his life, Pam Short, and loved every minute of it. He was proud of the man that he became and the man she encouraged him to become. He loved, loved, loved his grandchildren and great- grandchildren. He was the best husband, Papa, and Daddy that anyone could have asked for! He was a member of Fairview Baptist Church where he taught College boys Sunday school and had a daily devotion that he often shared with his children and grandchildren. Mr. Short was a Christian man who walked the walk and talked the talk. He enjoyed ALL sports—especially playing them in the backyard with the kids and grandkids. He loved his football and basketball crews and had a genuine love of the games that he refereed and also the many softball/baseball games that he umpired over the years. He loved playing/coaching softball for Cash Distributing and coaching Ellefson Plumbing, his women’s softball team in the ’70s. Mr. Short devoted 27 years of service to USA Softball. A lover of music of all genres, he was the proud owner of The Fraction Record Store and Exile on Main Game Room. Mr. Short was Executive Director of Columbus Lowndes Recreation Authority and Interim Director of Lowndes County Parks and Recreation. He was also an advocate for community centers to be built, senior citizen activities, children’s activities, and the upkeep of the many community parks. Mr. Short was a visionary for Columbus Soccer Complex and saw it through to its completion, as well as an innovator of the Columbus Sportsplex of which he was able to attend the recent groundbreaking.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Ollie Aubrey Short and Overton Lee “Vernon” Short; sister, Patsy Short; grandfather, Oliver Garland Harrell; and grandmother, Betty Annalee Harrell.
He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Pamela Lawson Short; daughters, Lori Short Simpson, Ashley Tutor (Darrell) Holley, Kimberly Tutor Rogers, Carly Ann Short (Chad) Feltman, Haley Elizabeth (Philip) Tutor and Harper Leigh Short; son, Jeremy Harrell (Chelle) Short; grandchildren, Megan Simpson, Jordan Simpson, Chelsea Short, Paighton “Park” Simpson, Ty Thomas, Dominic Holley, Annleigh Short- Harrison, Alyssa Holley and Rollins Feltman; great-grandchildren, Neciea Humphrey, Riyah Simpson, Layklynn Simpson; sisters, Sherry Wages and Candace Bush; and fur-son, Dierks.
