Robert Douglas McRae, age 83, of Columbus, MS, passed away Sunday, November 11, 2018, at Sanctuary Hospice House, Tupelo, MS. A visitation will be held on Thursday, November 15, 2018, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Lowndes Funeral Home, Columbus, MS and on Friday, November 16, 2018, from 12:00 – 1:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church, Columbus, MS. The funeral service will be held on Friday, November 16, 2018, at 1:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church, with Bro. Ralph Windle officiating. Chad Kingsbury will be sharing some words of remembrance. Interment with military honors will be at Lone Oak Cemetery, Steens, MS, with Lowndes Funeral Home directing. Mr. McRae was born on April 19, 1935, in Rockingham, NC, to the late Oscar Henry and Beulah Harris McRae. He retired from the United States Air Force after serving as a TSgt for 21 years in ground radio communications. Prior to serving in the USAF, he served years in the U.S. Marine Corps. He also retired from the U.S. Postal Service, where he worked over 25 years as a postal clerk. Mr. McRae was a devoted husband and father. He loved his family and country. He was a strong and courageous man with a humble spirit who was loved for his kindness and his appreciation for the simple things in life. He was a selfless, loving person who never spoke badly of anyone. He had an infectious laugh that was loved by all. He was a soldier in every way, and what a great honor for God to call him home on Veterans Day. In addition to his parents, Mr. McRae was preceded in death by his wife, Margie Leona Mason McRae; his sisters, Mary Dunn, Grace Hogge, Martha (Mot) Barron, Nellie Dunn and Dorothy Morgan; and his brothers, Bill McRae, Leon McRae and Farrell McRae. He is survived by his daughters, Melissa McRae of Columbus, MS, Robbie Sprouse of Columbus, MS and Tammy (Jody) Baker of Columbus, MS; sons, Jeff (Stacy) McRae of Columbus, MS, Greg (Amy) McRae of Vernon, AL and Mark McRae of Rockingham, NC; grandchildren, Monica Montgomery, Justin (Terri) Everhart, Nathan (Emily) Sprouse, Savannah Baker, Andrew McRae, Shaun McRae and Connor McRae; three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Justin Everhart, Nathan Sprouse, Shaun McRae, Bill Mason, Rufus Mason and Allan Wheeler. Honorary pallbearers will be Andrew McRae, Connor McRae and James Stewart. The family extends their deepest gratitude to the Sanctuary Hospice House staff, Halcyon Hospice of Batesville, MS and to our family and friends for their loving care and support.
