Raymond D. “Ray” Barksdale, Jr., age 85, died April 15, 2009, at The Windsor Place Nursing & Rehab Center in Columbus, MS Services will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Sunday, April 19, 2009, at 3:00 PM with Father James Carlyle officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Sunday, April 19, 2009, from 1:30 PM Sunday until service time at the church. Mr. Barksdale was born on March 17, 1924 in Memphis, TN to the late Raymond D. and Suzie Hardaway Barksdale Sr. He was a dedicated member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, a U. S. Army Aircorp WWII Veteran, and a member of the American Legion T.S. Patterson Post 69. He retired from the Columbus Public School System in 1986 where he had served as Supervisor of school services since 1962. He was a charter member of the Mississippi School Food Service Association and served as its’ first president in 1957 and again in 1968. From 1980-1982 he served as national treasure for that same organization. Mr. Barksdale was a longtime member of the Columbus Exchange Club and served as president in 1970-1971. Mr. Barksdale served as the treasure for the Lowndes County 4-H Club and served on the Board of Directors for the Lowndes County Chapter of the American Red Cross in 1989. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 32 years Walterine Beason Barksdale. Survivors include: daughter – Malinda Bivens (Harry) of Charlotte, NC; son -Raymond D. Barksdale, III (Sharon) of Amory, MS; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother – Eugene Barksdale (Agnes) of Hattiesburg, MS. The pallbearers are Eric Barksdale, Tyler Barksdale, and the Ushers from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
