MACON — Percy Brooks Sr., 97, died June 14, 2009, at Noxubee General Hospital in Macon. Services are Friday from 11 a.m. at the Tabernacle MB Church in Macon. Visitation is today from noon-3 p.m. at Lee Sykes Funeral Home Chapel, of Macon. The wake will be today from 5-7 p.m. at Sylvan Ridge MB Church in Macon with the Rev. Ron Wilson officiating; family time is from 4-5 p.m. Burial will follow at Sylvan Ridge/Tabernacle Cemetery of Macon. Mr. Brooks was born Oct. 15, 1911, in Macon, to the late Mr. Walter Walker and Lillian Brooks. His parents were deceased at an early age, so he was raised by his grandparents, Wil and Amanda Brooks. He is retired from the brick plant. He served in the following capacities: Sunday school teacher, a superintendent of Sunday school, president of the Baptist Training Union, church clerk, secretary of the First James Creek State convention, trustee of M and I College and First James Creek Association, president of the THM & S (Toliver Chapel, Hope Well, Mount Mariah and Sylvan Ridge) Protem and other civic capacities. In 1945, he was ordained a deacon of Sylvan Ridge MB Church. He was named the 2004 Greatest Dad by The Colom Foundation, and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and Cumulus Broadcasting. He is survived by his wife, Callie Harlan Brooks, of Macon; sister, Danella Cooper, of Chicago; sons, Hayden Williams, of Gulfport, Harlan Brooks, of St. Louis, Howard German, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Percy Brooks Jr., of Jackson, Wil Brooks, of North Carolina, George Brooks, of Jackson and Bernard Brooks, of Macon; daughters, Drew Meeks, of St. Louis, Lillian Townsend, of Columbus, and Hazel Brooks, of Macon; 27 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and 35 great-great-grandchildren.
