Peggy Jean Graham Sherman, 74, of Columbus died Saturday, February 21, at Baptist Memorial Hospital – Golden Triangle. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, February 24, 2009 at Friendship Cemetery at 2:30 pm with the Rev. Dr. Prentiss M. Gordon officiating. Visitation will be at Gunter and Peel Funeral Home from 1:00 pm until the time of the service. Mrs. Sherman was born April 28, 1934 to the late William May and Thelma Pearson Graham of Gadsden, Alabama. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Betty Sue Ezell of Hazelgreen, AL, and brother, William May Graham, Jr., of Leesburg, AL. Mrs. Sherman graduated from Gadsden High School and attended Jacksonville (AL) State College. She was a resident of Columbus since 1961 and was an original member of the Mississippi University for Women Faculty Wives Club, serving as its president during part of the time it was active. She also served as a hostess for the annual Columbus Pilgrimage for a number of years. She was a member of the Central Methodist Church. The Butterfly & Hummingbird Gardens at the Plymouth Bluff Center have been named for Mrs. Sherman in recognition of her love for these natural “jewels” and her long-time interest in the environmental center. This perpetual memorial will be supported by annual contributions from her family and friends. Mrs. Sherman is survived by her husband of 53 years, Dr. Harry Sherman of Columbus; daughter, Cheryl Kerr (John) of Columbus; five sons, William Sherman of Houston, TX, Dr. John Sherman of Waynesville, NC, Christopher Sherman of Lawrenceville, GA, Patrick Sherman (Candi) of Birmingham and Paul Sherman (Holly) of Atlanta; six grandchildren, Kristyn Kerr Brown of Birmingham, Brandon Kerr of U.S. Navy, Justin Kerr of Columbus, Hannah and Avery Sherman of Atlanta and Ella Sherman of Birmingham; sister-in-law, Eileen Graham of Gadsden, AL; brother-in-law, Milton Ezell of Hazelgreen, AL; aunt, Hazel Morgan of Rainbow City, AL, and nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be her five sons, Bill, John, Chris, Patrick and Paul, and grandson Brandon Kerr. Honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Bryan, Dr. Carl Doumit, Dr. Jon Fortman, Dr. Ray Gildea, Dave Haffly, Dr. Charlie Holcomb, John (Buddy) Kerr, Dr. Bruce Lacey, Dr. William Parker, Vernell Taylor, and Dr. John Wierengo.
