STEENS — Otis Barrry, 80, died June 12, 2009, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital . Services are Saturday at noon at Military Chapel Church, Highway 12, Columbus. Visitation is today from noon-6:30 at Century Hairston Funeral Home of Columbus, followed by family hours from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Mr. Barry was born Sept. 18, 1928, in Steens, to the late Louis and Magnolia Barry. He was a retired educator.He was educated at Military Chapel Elementary School and graduated from Union Academy High School in 1947. He received his Bachelor of Science from Mississippi Valley College in Itta Bena in 1961. Later, in 1970 he earned his bachelor’s degree in administration and supervision in 1970 from the University of Alabama.He served in the U.S. army from Oct. 27, 1950 to July 1953 as well as June 28, 1954 to June 1957. He served in the reserves until his honorable discharge in 1961. He was a lifelong member of Military United Methodist Church where he served as church treasurer, former Sunday school superintendent, the United Methodist Men,Union Academy Reunion Club, Eta Phi Lamda Chapter of the Alpha Pi Alpha, where he served as historian and assistant treasurer,the 4-H advisory committee since 1970, the nominating committee for the Board of Directors for Four county and past president of the Columbus Lowndes Retired Teachers and the T. P. Harris Elks Lodge. . He is survived by sons, Romell Barry, of Columbus, and Issac Barry, of Ocala, Fla.; sisters, Ollie Rose Baber, of Seattle, Wash., Elnora Floyd, of Caledonia, and Barbara Kennedy, of Moss Point; and his brother, Willie George Barry, of El Paso, Texas. Pallbearers are from the United Methodist Men.
