Opal Carroll

AMORY — Opal Evans Carroll, 91, died Feb. 5, 2009, at the Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. Services are today at 1 p.m. at E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel in Amory with Dr. Allen Simpson and the Rev. Jimmy McFatter officiating. Burial will follow at Masonic Cemetery in Amory. Visitation will continue today until service time at the funeral home. Mrs. Carroll was born Dec. 13, 1917, in the New Salem Community of Itawamba County to the late Itha James and Hassie Wallace Evans. She was a graduate of Itawamba Agricultural High School and received a Bachelor of Science degree from University of Southern Mississippi. She was an elementary teacher for over 30 years, teaching in Itawamba and Monroe Counties, and she retired from the Wiggins schools. After retirement she moved back to Amory and was active in First Baptist Church and community affairs. She had been a resident of the Traceway Retirement Community for five years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Byron Wheeler and Edwin J. Carroll; brother, Owen Evans; and sister, Cecil Johnson. Pallbearers will be John Evans, Jason Fleming, Evan Adams, Bobby Joe Stevens, Pete Patterson, and Bob Wilson. Memorials may be made to: First Baptist Church, P.O.
