COLUMBUS — Charlie “Pen” Hairston, 85, died Feb. 11, 2020, in Columbus. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, at Charity Mission Full Gospel Baptist Church, with Bobby L. McCarter Sr. officiating. Burial will follow at Turner-Hairston Cemetery in Crawford. Visitation is from 12-5:30 p.m. today, at Century Hairston Funeral Home of Columbus. Century Hairston Funeral Home of Columbus is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Hairston was born June 3, 1934, in Crawford, to the late John Moseley Hairston and Mary Ella Samuel Hairston. He was formerly employed as a factory worker at a corrugate box company in Chicago, Illinois, owned and operated a neighborhood candy store, worked for Waste Management in Lowndes County, and for the Lowndes County School Bus Company. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Ella, mattie, Katie, Virginia, Mamie and Walter. He is survived by his daughter, Sheneen R. Travis; siblings, Mary Glenn, John Hairston, Wordley Beard all of Columbus and Ruth Pippin of Morrow, Georgia; and one grandchild.
