Neal Smith

PRAIRIE — Neal Hunter Smith, 92, died May 14, 2009, at North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point. Services were Saturday at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Lampkin officiating. Burial followed at Cantrell Cemetery. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Smith was born Jan. 6, 1917, in Prairie to the late Jake Gatman Smith and Francis Eugene Henley Smith. He lived in the Una Community, was a farmer and had worked for B & W and TVA. He was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. He was retired from the 31st Dixie Division of the Mississippi National Guard with 32 years service. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army, 155th and 124th Infantry. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 38 and Aberdeen Veterans of Foreign Wars. In addition to his parents, he was preceded by his sons, Rex and Raymond Smith; brothers, Lawson, Jasper, Gene, Sonny, L.E. and Hendon Smith; and one great-grandson. He is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Smitherman Smith of Prairie; daughter, Patsy Jean Howell of Prairie; son, Neal Ray Smith of Prairie; seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Laddie Huffman, Wayne Crosswhite, Dennis Petit, Larry Brasfield, Bud Henley and Clark Baker. Memorials may be made to Cantrell Cemetery Care Fund, c/o Mrs. Linda Smith, 271 L.W.
