Mason Walley

Mason A. Walley, 88, died March 7, 2009, at Baptist Memorial Hospital–Golden Triangle. Graveside services are Monday at 11 a.m. at Friendship Cemetery with the Rev. Prentiss Gordon officiating. Mr. Wally was born in Richton to the late Buford A. and Rena Elizabeth Smith Walley. While living in Columbus, he was director of the Lowndes County Welfare Office. He worked for HUD until his retirement. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner. During WWII, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Seminole and saw action in China and Okinawa. He was a graduate of Mississippi State University and was a member of Bluff Park United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Sarah S. Walley, of Columbus; daughter, Carolyn W. Smith, of Birmingham, Ala.; son, George A. Walley of Lees Summit, Mo.; and brother, Grady Walley of Sand Hill.
