Marion Peterson

Marion Claude “Pete” Peterson, of Pickensville, AL, passed away peacefully at home on June 6, 2021, at the age of 81 due to complications from leukemia.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 15, 2021, from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM at Mount
Zion Baptist Church, Columbus, MS. Graveside service to follow with Bro. Steve Lammons and Bro. Ralph Windle co-officiating.
Pete was born on February 21, 1940, in State Line, MS, to the late Mary Helton and Amma Charles Peterson. He graduated in 1958 from Vigor High School in Mobile, AL. Immediately after high school, Pete joined the Navy and was stationed in San Diego, CA until he was honorably discharged as AMS2 in February 1963. He enjoyed a long career in various mechanical/ electrical positions, and retired in 2004 after 22 years from Weyerhaeuser Pulp and Paper Mill in Columbus, MS.
Fun loving Pete was always known for having a joke to share to anyone who would listen! He was a life long fan of Alabama football, and enjoyed attending home games whenever possible. At one point he was a member of the Masonic Rising Sun Lodge #29 in Decatur, AL. He served as assistant coach for his son’s pop warner football and baseball teams, and was very involved in New Hope Athletics Booster Club. Retirement years were filled with weekly golf games with friends, and traveling to see his grandsons, who lovingly called him “PawPaw”. He also enjoyed volunteering alongside his wife with various activities at the church.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Barbara Swales Peterson; daughter, Mary Peterson (Kyle) Grant; grandchildren, Carson Grant, Garrett Grant; brothers, Charles (Rosalee) Peterson, Joe (Mary) Peterson; sisters, Betty Jo Hutchinson, Bobbie Jean Hall, Ann (Dale) Cleckler; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Pete is preceded in death by his son, Jeff Peterson; and sisters, Elizabeth Crager, Eva Miller, Jackie McGuire and Lucille Dean.
Honorary pallbearers are Joe Lewis, Pete Puckett, John Russell, Dale Cleckler, Larry Swales, David Dortch, Kyle Grant, Carson Grant, Garrett Grant and Weyerhaeuser friends.
