CRAWFORD — Lula Mae Young Sykes, 65, died March 23, 2009, at North Mississippi Medical Center–Tupelo. Services are Saturday at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. James Rice officiating. Burial will follow at Union Chapel Cemetery in Brooksville. Visitation is today from 1-6 p.m. at West Memorial Funeral Home in Starkville. Mrs. Sykes was born May 18, 1943, in Noxubee County to the late Sammie and Lucy Stallings Young. She worked food service and was employed at Moor High School for 25 years. She was a Baptist, a community seamstress and an Avon representative for over 31 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Jessie J. Young. She is survived by her son, Kirby Sykes of Greenville; stepson, James Darren Gholston of St. Louis; stepdaughter, Marian Rena Gholston of St. Louis; brothers: William, Sammie and David Young, all of Chicago, and Bobby Young of Atlanta; sisters: Melvina Young of Lafayette, Ind., Lillie Allison of Washington, Susan O’Neal of Chicago, Marvia Jean Miller of Calumet City, Ill., Eunice Pree of Fayette, Christen and Lois Steen Young of Detroit; and two stepgrandchildren.
